40% Gas Hike in Ontario Will Impact Facility Operating Budgets

Comments Closed

Recent news about gas hikes in Ontario is raising concerns for a lot of companies—and it’s raising energy costs too. Commercial buildings or facilities will experience a significant increase in their heating and cooling costs this year.

After a long and cold winter (and the increased energy use that comes with it) energy companies have had to increase prices to match the rising costs of natural gas. Increased rates for Enbridge gas customers have been in effect since April 1st and Union Gas and NRG have also applied to the Ontario Energy Board for price increases.

Enbridge is Canada’s largest natural gas energy delivery company and they have recently increased energy costs by 40%. Enbridge has estimated that “for a typical commercial and industrial heating customer, the changes will result in an increase of approximately $2880 annually.”  How will this impact energy use for your commercial building? And how much of an increase will larger institutional facilities experience? Many facility operators are expecting energy cost increases to be much higher than the estimate given from Enbridge.

Facility managers in Ontario will need to cut costs in other areas or find ways to lower energy costs.
