Getting the Facts on Air-Duct Cleaning

Comments Closed

According to Health Canada, Canadians spend 90% of their time indoors—in work-spaces and residences—and so there is much concern these days over indoor air quality.  As such, there has been a corresponding concern over the cleanliness of air-ducts—should they be cleaned?

Duct-cleaning isn’t always appropriate.  Texas A & M University research suggests that there is “little published data” on “the impact of air duct cleaning on residential indoor air quality or energy.”  But it seems that there have never been so many fly-by-night air-duct cleaning companies around—and with countless cold-calls made every evening.

So what’s right?

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, duct-cleaning is appropriate for the following reasons:

  • Permanent or persistent water damage occurs

  • Microbial growth is detected in ducts

  • Significant debris restricts air-flow

  • Odours are detected originating from the ducts or HVAC components

But instead of looking at your ducts right away, it is advisable to look deeper within the HVAC system.  The source of contaminants just may lurk elsewhere.  And the key to finding problems is by having a thorough inspection from a trained and certified HVAC specialist.

We defer to Texas A & M on this one:

“The key to preventing air-duct pollution problems is a combination of proper design and dedicated inspection and maintenance.  Eliminating the source for the pollutants is much more cost effective than cleanup or replacement.”

At Intelligent Comfort Solutions, we have always advocated for dedicated, periodic maintenance of HVAC systems to prevent indoor air quality issues, loss of energy efficiency, and to control energy and equipment costs.
