Think Cooler Temperatures Make Workers More Productive? Think Again.

Comments Closed

Office Temperatures Affect ProductivityThe common belief in the office environment is that cooler temperatures keep employees alert and increase their productivity, but studies have shown that the opposite is true. Turning down the air conditioning in the summer months can save on energy outputs and costs—but it can also save you money by increasing employee productivity, accuracy, and job satisfaction.

Productivity and Accuracy

A study from Cornell University concluded that raising the temperature from 20°C to 24°C reduces company costs due to a 44% reduction in employee errors. It also increased employee typing output by 150%. When employees are cold they are easily distracted; they need to grab a sweater, go get a coffee, or turn up a (noisy) space heater. These distractions make it difficult for employees to focus on their work, but when temperatures are warmer, our bodies spend less time trying to keep warm and reserve more energy which we can use for thinking and being productive.

Happy Feelings

An article in Fast Company explains how warm temperatures result in happier employees. Warmth is associated with trust and we are more likely to get along with others when we are physically warmer. We feel isolated when temperatures drop; we put our guard up and are more likely to view others as less caring. When the temperatures are warmer we let our guard down and connect with coworkers —improving our job satisfaction.

Warmer offices may improve productivity and morale, but don`t think you can shut off the AC system and have the same effectiveness. The tipping point seems to be 24°C; employee errors began to rise and productivity started to decline once temperatures went even one degree  over 24°C. Turning down the AC is sure to save you money on energy costs, but an outdated inefficient HVAC unit is still holding you back. Installing an optimized HVAC unit will allow your system to run efficiently and improve air quality —resulting in increased productivity from fewer employee sick days.
