Signs of a Failing HVAC Unit

Comments Closed

Let’s admit it! There are times it seems everything to do with your HVAC unit is going wrong at home. The thermostat appears to have developed a mind of its own; there is poor air flow in your rooms, or your air conditioner produces noises louder than a saw mill.

Some of these household problems can be solved by you while others might need you to contact your HVAC provider. These are 4 reasons why you might consider calling your HVAC vendor:

  1. Uneven heating in rooms.

Sometimes, the rooms upstairs may be too hot while downstairs’ are too cold. Though temperatures differ depending on floors, this may be cause for alarm.

Causes include:-

  • Your air filters may be dirty, and thus, air can’t get through. It might call for a change in air filters.
  • There might be blockages in the ductwork, and thus, air cannot circulate.
  • You might be having an improperly sized HVAC unit which might not be adequately cooling all the areas of your home.
  1. Noise

Though some sounds like the usual buzzing of the air conditioner may be normal, noises are a tell-tale sign of a failing HVAC system. So what kind of sounds should raise your concern?

  • Loud ‘metal –hitting-metal’ type of sounds. These may be as a result of fan blades hitting something, possibly ice, a wire or tubing.
  • Loud rattling, thumping, clanking or banging noises. Rattling may get caused by a component coming loose in the system. Repairs should be done to prevent the parts from breaking or disconnecting.
  • Repeated clicking sounds. It may be due to a defective relay. An electrical control may also be causing the relay to timeout and fail.
  1. Strange smells.

And I’m not talking about the smell of pancakes or bacon on Saturday morning. Irritating smells that you are sure are not as a result of your garbage and neither can you trace their origin. Types of smells:

  • The smell of rotten eggs. It might be due to a natural gas leak and should be taken very seriously as it might be fatal.
  • The smell of something is overheating. It may be attributable to electrical wiring being bad or torn. It is crucial to note that it may lead to burns and cause damage to your system by catching fire.
  • Moldy/ musty smell. It may get caused by condensation buildups in air conditioning units.
  • Burning smell. It gets commonly caused by an oil leak which then burns off due to a motor’s heat output.
  1. High energy bills.

It is common for the bill to be high during the coldest months. However, if your electric bills are suddenly higher than normal, there might be a problem with the heat pump. These problems may be as a result of a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, dirty air filter, an iced-up outdoor unit, refrigerant leak or a damaged compressor.
